We’re approaching the final weekend before the NBA regular season tips off, meaning there will be a flurry of draft activity in the coming days. With that in mind, let’s take a look at percent-owned numbers in Yahoo! leagues as of 10/21 and identify immediate pick-ups to to consider, as well as last-round notables and Watch List recommendations.
The Best of What’s Left - players currently rostered in 60% of leagues or less
D.J. Augustin (CHA – PG,SG) 55% owned
The news of Raja Bell’s injury should have sent you immediately to the wire to scan for Augustin. If you haven’t previously, then go take a look now… Bell’s misfortune means great things for Augustin’s fantasy impact, whether he starts or not. In the 24 games where he saw at least 30 minutes as a rookie, he averaged 16.5 points on 43 percent shooting, 2.2 threes, 5 assists, 1 steal, and 4.3 free throw attempts (while shooting 92%). I’d easily roster Augustin over Jamal Crawford, who is currently 84-percent owned.
Anthony Morrow (GSW – SG,SF) 35% owned
Don Nelson is leaning towards giving a starting gig (SG) to Morrow, and efficient volume offense would no doubt be the result of such a move. In his 17 starts as a rookie last season, he averaged 16.7 points on 48 percent shooting, 2.2 threes, 4.6 boards, 1.1 steals, and just 1.4 turnovers in 35 minutes. The typical disclaimer regarding Nellie’s whims applies here, but his stellar preseason production (20.3 points, 3.3 treys, percentages of 56/54/96) should help inspire some confidence. I’d roster him well ahead of someone like Peja Stojakovic (76% owned).
Channing Frye (PHO – PF,C) 31% owned
So let me get this straight – a three-point shooting center that has been named the starter in the Suns’ run-and-gun system is owned in just over a quarter of leagues? Move quickly in the event that he’s currently available in your league… Frye has made half of his threes in the preseason (1.9 makes per game) and chipped in 12.7 points, 4.4 boards, and 1.2 steals-plus-blocks in 26 minutes per game. His situation alone means you should roster him now and see what happens later.
Yi Jianlian (NJN – PF) 50% owned
I can’t necessarily blame you for being scared of Yi’s career shooting percentage of 40 percent. What you need to be aware of, however, is that efforts over the summer to improve his post game and keep him closer to the basket appear to be manifesting themselves in his preseason performance. He’s attempted just two threes in five games, helping his shooting percentage stay at a relatively-high 47 percent, and his averages in 25 minutes aren’t too shabby (11.8 points, 6.6 rebounds, 1.4 steals, 0.6 blocks). You want growth potential at the end of your bench, and Yi offers exactly that, as the Nets want nothing more than for him to succeed.
Ryan Gomes (MIN – SF,PF) 38% owned
Gomes figures to be the biggest beneficiary in the wake of the Kevin Love injury. His steady-but-unspectacular line took on new offensive life in last season’s second half (16.3 points, 1.3 threes after the break), and that trend will need to continue for this desperately thin roster. Although there aren’t a lot of defensive stats to be had here, the boards at least should come up a bit as he plays more power forward.
Roy Hibbert (IND – C) 54% owned
Hibbert was reasonably effective as a starter in his rookie season (9 points, 4.1 boards, 1.2 blocks) when you consider that foul trouble limited him to just 17 minutes per in those 42 games. He has followed up a big-time summer with a very solid preseason (11.8 points, 6.4 boards, 3.4 blocks in 25 minutes). Although the foul trouble isn’t going to go away completely, the 23-year-old has very solid fantasy potential in one of the league’s most friendly systems.
Andres Nocioni (SAC – SF,PF) 18% owned
Nocioni is going to play plenty while Francisco Garcia is sidelined, whether he starts or not. In 23 games down the stretch for the Kings last season, Noc averaged 13.7 points, 2 threes, 6 boards, and 1.3 steals-plus-blocks in 31 minutes. I’d roster Nocioni in favor of players like Corey Maggette (76% owned) and Al Thornton(72%).
Brendan Haywood (WAS – C) 53% owned
It’s easy to forget about Haywood since he only appeared in six games last season, but it’s not like he wasn’t productive in those six games (9.7 points, 7.3 boards, 2.5 blocks). His numbers in 80 games from 2007-08 are indicative of his skill-set (10.6 points on 53 percent shooting, 7.2 boards, 1.7 blocks in 28 minutes) and he can provide excellent back-of-the-rotation help if you need a bump in big-man stats.
Antonio McDyess (SAS – PF,C) 53% owned
‘Dyess won’t top 30 minutes per game this season, but he’s never needed that much playing time to be successful in the first place. Over the past three seasons, in 27 minutes per game, he’s averaged 8.8 points, 8 boards, 1.5 steals-plus-blocks, and a microscopic 0.9 turnovers. There’s not tremendous upside here, but there’s also little-to-no downside.
Other Notables - Watch List nominees for standard leagues and/or deeper-league options
Kelenna Azubuike (GSW – SG,SF) 51% owned
While it appears that Azubuike will begin the season as a reserve, he still has solid glue guy potential, particularly if the Stephen Jackson “situation” gets even more out of hand. In 32 minutes per game overall last season, Azubuike averaged 14.4 points on 46 percent shooting, 1.3 threes, 5 boards, 1.5 steals-plus-blocks, and 81-percent foul shooting.
Anthony Parker (CLE – SG,SF) 25% owned
Parker is set to reprise his role as a glue guy extraordinaire for as long as Delonte West’s status remains in limbo. In 235 games over the past three seasons, Parker has accumulated the following line in 33 minutes per game: 11.9 points on 46 percent shooting, 1.5 threes, 4 boards, 2.6 assists, just 1.2 turnovers, 1.1 steals, and 83-percent foul shooting.
Brandon Jennings (MIL – PG) 37% owned
While his 34-percent shooting and 2.8 turnovers in the preseason is a reminder that Jennings still has a ways to go, it’s abundantly clear that he’s already among the most dynamic players on the Bucks’ roster. It’s only a matter of time before he’s playing more than Luke Ridnour, and that may even be from the outset.
Danilo Gallinari (NY – SF) 21% owned
All the off-season signs were positive regarding Gallinari, but then he showed up to camp far from “game shape” and has shot 32 percent thus far in the preseason. He’ll come off the bench to start the season and may not have much of an impact early, as he continues to work on his conditioning, but he’s absolutely someone to track as the season progresses.
Drew Gooden (DAL – PF,C) 23% owned
Gooden will split the starts at center with Erick Dampier, meaning he’s technically a match-up play, but he should at least be a good one. There are plenty of boards available on this team of jump-shooters, and he’s averaged 12.3 points, 8.5 boards, and 1.5 steals-plus-blocks in 396 career starts.
Andersen Varejao (CLE – PF,C) 35% owned
Just a friendly reminder that Varejao is still the starter and still looking at roughly 30 minutes per game. In 29 minutes per game last season, he averaged 8.6 points on 54 percent shooting, 7.2 boards, 0.9 steals, 0.8 blocks and just 1 turnover per game.
Corey Brewer (MIN – SG,SF) 7% owned
Brewer has emerged as a near-lock to start with a strong preseason (14.3 points, 4.3 boards, 1.8 steals). An up-tempo system is clearly the best fit for him, as he’s still a very raw offensive player – it should be noted that he’s shooting just 37 percent from the floor in preseason games. He’s in a fantastic position in terms of opportunity, however, so that shouldn’t be ignored.
Hakim Warrick (MIL – SF,PF) 33% owned
Warrick’s fantasy contributions don’t run deep, but his proven ability to at least score the ball is somewhat unique on the Bucks’ roster as of this point. His per-30 minute averages over the past three seasons include 14.4 points on 51-percent shooting and 6 boards.
Chris Douglas-Roberts (NJN – PG,SG) 6% owned
Terrence Williams got the early buzz, but it’s CDR that has likely played his way into the starting lineup during the preseason, averaging 17 points on 53-percent shooting in five games. Just don’t be expecting much outside of some scoring for fantasy purposes – his per-36 minute averages as a rookie last season included 0.2 threes, 3.1 boards, 3.2 assists, and 0.7 steals.
Andray Blatche (WAS – PF,C) 18% owned
Blatche is at least worth watching while Antawn Jamison works his way back from his shoulder injury. The latest on Jamison is good, however, and there’s only real upside here if Jamison has some kind of major setback.
DeJuan Blair (SAS – SF,PF) 17% owned
I’d be doing you all a disservice if I didn’t at least point out Blair’s preseason production, which includes 14.7 points, 8.2 boards, and 1.7 steals in just 18 minutes per game. While he may have already pushed the issue in terms of some consistent minutes, there won’t be a lot available behind Tim Duncan and Antonio McDyess night-in and night-out.
Carl Landry (HOU – SF,PF) 16% owned
While Chuck Hayes’ defense may earn him the starting spot alongside Luis Scola, Landry’s energy and production will ensure that he gets his fair share of the minutes, as well. In the 40 career games that he’s seen at least 23 minutes of playing time, Landry has averaged 11.9 points on 60-percent shooting and 6.1 boards.
Julian Wright (NOR – SF,PF) 16% owned
The 22-year-old has struggled in the preseason, but the team would like nothing more than to keep him in the starting lineup and limit Peja Stojakovic’s minutes. His per-30 minute averages through the first two seasons of his career include 5.7 boards, 1.4 steals, and 0.7 blocks.

I am also down on Julian Wright, as he has not shown glimpses of anything thus far, and with a recent injury, leaves little interest. Excellent analysis as always.

Lou and Augistine will probably be the 2nd or 3rd options on their teams, where as Foye will be the 4th option at best, after Arenas, Butler, and Jamison. And even then, he’s splitting time with Mike Miller.

Auggie, Foye, Sweet Lou – in that order. My money says Gilbert plays a straight, team-first PG this year. (Ofc, he’s taken my money before…) But, if the Wiz take advantage of Miller & Foye’s passing skills out of the SG spot, or put them both on the floor at the same time, you’ve got your assists. As for Lou, he’s just not an assist-machine. And, in the Princeton O (which really runs two G’s, two F’s and a C, rather than the 1-5 spots), the assists should be spread around amongst the team more, and less-concentrated in the “PG”.

I think Nellie will start Turiaf next to Biedrins some nights, making him an interesting spot-starter. Anytime he plays 30+ minutes, he’s a fantasy force, he should at least be on the watch list.

I don’t see Butler or Thornton worth owning at this point, but CDR had another good game tonight: 26/4/5/4/2, and 10-10 fts. Is it possible he outproduces Courtney Lee? Too many sleepers, not enough bench..
I’d take that with a grain of salt. Devin Harris was out. He’s still an intriguing pickup nonetheless.
Butler, on the other hand, has been producing pretty ok numbers while sharing the court with Baron, Gordon and Griffin
CDR has such a stellar preseason that I had decided to draft him in my first league this season earlier. But his uncharacteristic rookie’s stats made me hold back. Preseason is full of hypes, IMHO, it’s better wait and see how he reacts in the real games.
As for Morrow, I just can’t recall any rookie in this decade with similar stats (47.8% 46.7%, 87%), not even sharp-shooters like Ray Allen and Redd. Actually he is a consistent shooters, what makes him looks inconsistent is his coach.
Another potential breakout player left out in Buser’s list is Marreese Speights though he doesn’t earn enough minutes right now.

How many teams are in the league? The Camby, Kaman, Dalembert trio should be interesting, especially as you’re relying on them for rebounds and blks. Great FT%, poor fg%, great threes, bad assists, good points. Give up on assists and fg% and try to build rebs and blks, as they will be key I think.

So this seems crazy to me – ESPN has Leandro Barbosa at 127 on the draft queue (crazy spelling on that one) resulting in his being left off of 21% of rosters! There’s been some hype around this guy, i’ve seen the 6th man going in the 5th and 6th rounds on less reputable sites…
Sooo… I have a question in addition to my incredulousness. In a standard points league (i know – not anyone’s favorite – including me) should he be added in favor of either Nate Rob (95%) or Lou Williams (98%)??? If so which one?
That is pretty crazy. I don’t know the ESPN point system but Barbosa should be highly regarded for the upcoming season. If I were you, I’d take Barbosa over L. Williams in any site, any league, any format. The value between Nate and Barbosa are debatable for this season. Nate has more potential since he’s pretty much the new version of what Barbosa was playing for D’Antoni.
Ya, there analysis is all over the place. I am pretty high on KD, so the KD v Wade thing was intriguing. There are shoddy areas, however (like the aforementioned Barbosa, low ranking of Marion, etc). I don’t want to start sounding like the official BS.com ESPN apologist, but c’mon guys. Two points: (1) ESPN doesn’t use TO’s (so Buserites’ favorite high-efficiency players aren’t as valuable there), and (2) it’s all about pleasing/selling to the masses at ESPN. Leandrinho is a quiet reserve (pun intended) guy in the middle of the desert. Nate and Lou are relatively loud-mouthed starters in giant, East Coast media markets. Why do they put Shaq on their top-ten list of fantasy centers? Because most ESPN fantasy players can’t spell Biedrins! It is what it is there. Take ESPN for what it’s worth, and you won’t be disappointed.

In my opinion, dropping Anderson for Hibbert is an obvious move and a low-risk, high-reward one at that.
Birdman, for the most part, is considered a blocks specialist in fantasy circles and at this point, is still a role player coming off of Denver’s bench. On the flipside, Hibbert has a starting job and will get the minutes to put up a similar line in blocks (if not better due to playing time – as long as foul trouble subsides), but accompanied by more rebounds and points per contest. He’s looked amazing this preseason and has put up impressive lines against some high-tier centers.
If I were you, I’d run – not walk – to my waiver wire and act quickly before my leaguemates wise up.
I’d say wait for the real season to begin and see what hibbert can do. Anderson is a known quantity and will be snatched up quickly if you dump him. You have a lot of guards so why not drop someone like Brooks for Hibbert?
On second thought you would probably benefit from brook’s scoring over hibberts blocks. Randolph will probably emerge on the defensive end as well so you seem pretty set imo. Pre-season numbers are always dicey.

Augustin is available in my league and I want to pick him up. I have Sessions, Azubuike, and Hinrich on my bench. Who would you drop? I don’t know how much playing time Sessions and Azubuike will receive, so I’m leaning on one of them to drop. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
That’s a tough one – if I had to choose between two, It’d be Sessions and Hinrich.
I like Hinrich, don’t get me wrong – but he’s the type who needs to play to be effective, and honestly, I’d have to wait and see how Coach Vinny runs the rotation before I could give a more definitive answer on him. Sessions is in a tough place as well.
Even though Azubuike looks like he’ll be coming off the bench for now, he’ll get some run with Nellie. He may even get back into the mix (I mean, it IS Nellie we’re talking about here!). And of the three, I’d rather have Azubuike on my bench than anyone else.

As it stands I traded Jakim Noah for Barbosa. I kind of have a gap to fill in blks. Should I drop Azibuke for blatche? I’m on the fence because I think azibuke still has really good value and Blatche could be for rent given however long jamison is out. Frye and Haywood do not seem to be the most dependable service big men backups. My rebounding is weak and I have a lot of injury prone players, but my question is should i pick up blatch and for who? any opinions please. I need to make this decision soon as the league is very competitive and ppl jump on players fast. Thanks!

The only one I’d consider would be Lou Williams – he’s hasn’t been that bad in the pre-season – just not stellar.

Hey buser.. I have a trade pending. A manager has 4 big men injured(love,lopez,jefferson,etc) so I proposed to give him carlos boozer (which I’m not high on) for kevin martin. And he accepted right away. Is that a good of trade as I think. But that leaves me thin in the pf,c position. I need 3s, so am thinking of dropping Ronnie Brewer and Jarrett Jack for Terrence Williams and Martel Webster. It’s not like those guys are locks, but they have upside. Brewer’s a tough drop because of his FG% and STLs, but I got plenty of STLs.
Its a 14 team 14 player deep league, so pickings are slim. Brewer will be picked up immediately and maybe Jack because he got over 30 minutes.

I would say that randy foye is probably the most expendable player on my team, and one manager just dropped Ginobili. Ginobili will be on waivers until wednesday, do you think that it is worth it to drop Foye in order to pick up Ginobili?

Question 2: TJ Ford – he’s playing terribly now and was dropped by one of the GMs I dropped Ty Lawson to pick up ford and put him on the backburner till he wakes up and starts playing like he used to. Opinions on that move? terrible? great? ok? meh? My team badly needed a PG
